New Education Programs: Explore Owls and Vultures
At Tri‑State Bird Rescue & Research, we believe that curiosity is the spark that can ignite a lifelong love of wildlife. This year, our Education & Outreach team is thrilled to introduce two new hands‑on programs designed to bring science, conservation, and inspiration directly to students from kindergarten through 12th grade.
Our first program invites young learners to step into the wonderful world of owls. Students will explore what pellets are, why owls produce them, and what they reveal about an owl’s diet and hunting behavior. Through this engaging presentation, students will gain a fascinating look at how scientists use owl pellets to better understand food webs and ecosystems. Groups interested in adding a hands-on pellet dissection may do so, but they are responsible for providing their own pellets for that activity. The instructor can stay onsite after the presentation or return at another time to assist with the dissection process.
The second program shines a spotlight on one of nature’s most misunderstood heroes: vultures. Through an interactive lesson and a memorable demonstration, students learn how a vulture’s powerful stomach acid helps stop the spread of disease by safely breaking down harmful bacteria in the carrion they consume. This eye‑opening presentation not only highlights the incredible adaptations of these birds but also shows why vultures play such an essential role in maintaining healthy environments. By the end, students walk away with a newfound appreciation for a species often overlooked—and a better understanding of how every creature contributes to ecological balance. Like the owl program, an activity is available that will give students a real example of how acidic vulture stomachs work to digest food—this can be done onsite after the presentation or at another time.
Both programs are designed to be fun, age‑appropriate, and adaptable for all grade levels. Whether students are just beginning to explore the natural world or diving deeper into biology and environmental science, these experiences offer meaningful connections to wildlife and conservation.
Tri‑State is committed to inspiring the next generation of environmental stewards. With these new programs, we’re excited to help students discover the incredible stories hidden in nature—and the important role they can play in protecting it.
