In 2010, during the Deepwater Horizon oil spill, Tri-State was the lead oiled bird responder. Staff spent months onsite working diligently to mitigate the effects of oil on about 5,000 birds, including this Brown Pelican. Thanks to the dedicated time and care, this amazing bird has been seen flying free in at least four states over the last 15 years, including a few sightings with their fledglings!

Tri-State continues to be one of the only organizations with full time staff dedicated to oil spill preparedness, response, and education. This year, we are excited to be hosting the 15th Effects of Oil on Wildlife (EOW) Conference, to be held in Cape Town, South Africa. The EOW Program Committee is looking for oral presentations, poster displays, and panel discussions on topics such as international response networking, case studies, and innovations in veterinary and rehabilitation methods, among others.
