2008 Annual Open House

Tri-State Open House Survives Threat of Rain

Over 300 members of the community braved the questionable weather to visit Tri-State’s annual open house on April 27th, from 11am – 3pm. Almost 300 adults and children took advantage of the opportunity to get a behind the scenes look at what goes on at Tri-State every day. Groups were taken on tours of the facility by Tri-State staff and volunteers, where they were able to learn about what happens in different areas of the center. In the kitchen, guests learned that each different species is fed a diet designed for them, and saw a few plates prepared and ready to serve. Through the nursery window, everyone on the tours got a peek at 10 baby birds, each less than a week old, in their makeshift tissue nests in one of the incubators. Guests also had a chance to see x-rays of injured birds in the clinic, a demonstration of a wash line in the oil spill area, and a view of the many aviaries and cages on the property.

Kids had plenty to do to stay busy, whether playing in the moonbounce, getting their faces painted, planting a sunflower, or catching little ruddy ducks. Children – and some adults – brought their favorite stuffed animals to the Teddy Bear Clinic for a check-up. Entertainment was provided throughout the day by the antics of local celebrity mascots You-Dee, the University of Delaware’s blue hen, DelTech’s Terry Hawk and the Philadelphia Eagles’ Swoop.

The Tri-State grill served hot dogs, burgers, veggie burgers, and variety of drinks to hungry attendees while the bake sale tempted them with delicious baked breads and goodies. Despite the chill in the air, many of the guests still made sure to visit Woodside Farm Creamery’s ice cream trailer for a homemade dessert.

Thank you to our generous sponsors, event exhibitors, and many dedicated volunteers for making this year’s open house such a wonderful event! Click here to see our sponsors and visit their websites.
